Dealing With Grief During the Holidays. ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- The holidays are supposed to be a time of cheer, but for some that isn't the case. But a local program is designed to help folks handle grief, during what is supposed to be a festive time.
"He was diagnosed around Thanksgiving two years ago with lung cancer, stage four lung cancer, and died the first of March that year. So it was very quick, says Dianne Harper of her late husband.
Dianne lost her husband David after five years of marriage. For her, the holidays are especially tough. "I have to learn how to cope with everything it seems like, over and over. I mean the first Christmas I had to learn how to deal with it and then this year, it's different and I have to learn how to deal with it again, on another level, she says.
Dianne turned to CarePartners for support. "Oh my gosh, from beginning to end, I mean they are the best people. They're people who are committed and compassionate, she says.
If you're like Dianne and you're dealing with a loss as the holidays are quickly approaching, CarePartners offers a sign of hope. Monday and Tuesday they are hosting workshops that will help you cope with your grief during the holidays.
"One of the things I remember was that there was this room full of people that were in the same position I was," says Dianne. She attended last year and plans to come back.
Dianne says it helped her in more ways than one. "We made a votive candle in memory of our loved one and at first I thought that was kind of silly, but that got me through.
Organizers say the workshops are for anyone in the community dealing with a loss, and it doesn't have to be a recent loss. "The death could have happened ten years ago and maybe now it's just hitting them hard this year for some reason, so there's no time limit on grief, says Bereavement Manager, Lauren DiMaio.
For Dianne, the people at CarePartners help her push forward. "I tell people it was like the soft place I had to come."
The free workshops are Monday, November 17th from noon until 1 pm, and Tuesday, November 18th from 5:30pm until 6:30pm. They're held at Seymour Auditorium on the CarePartners campus in Asheville.
